Representatives from 50 non-profit organizations from Greater Portland and area home day care providers attended the first ever Altrusa Book Bash at the Alton “Chuck” Cianchette Scout Service Center on Johnson Road in Portland. Altrusa received more than 2500 children’s books from the Borders Holiday Book Drive. Shoppers at the South Portland Borders were asked at checkout if they would like to purchase a book for the book drive. Shoppers responded overwhelmingly.

The 3rd Annual Altrusa Empty Bowl event was very successful and well attended. The soup was delicious and the bowls were beautiful. Altrusans made bowls for the event and served the attendees. They raised $1065 for Project FEED. This event was coordinated by the Deb Smith (Club Member). The Club Treasurer, Marie Pike, presented the check to Pat Thompson, of Project FEED.

To celebrate Altrusa International's 2009 "Make a Difference Day," members from the Parkersburg, West Virginia Club Becky Vaughan (far left) and Kay Stoops (right) delivered the Club's donation of art supplies and books to the Parkersburg YMCA Daycare program for three and four year olds. As you can see from these children's smiling faces, they were absolutely delighted with what they received!

A check for $500 was presented to Agape House in Hermiston to purchase food and backpacks for children in Hermiston, Stanfield and McNary Oregon. Agape House coordinates with local schools to provide food for school children who may not have sufficient food over the weekend to be alert and ready to learn when they arrive at their school on Monday mornings. Altrusans spend two hours each Thursday filling an average of 35 backpacks for Stanfield and 15 backpacks for McNary School students. Members filling backpacks were recently shown on KEPR TV (Tri Cities WA) as part of a story on homeless and needy children in our area and how the community is trying to fill their needs.

Altrusa International of Hermiston, Oregon Foundation, Inc. donated $1,000 to three area churches for the local Open Kitchen Program. A check for $400 was issued to United Methodist Church, as they serve 2 meals a week. A check for $200 each was presented to First Christian Church, Church of Nazarene and Our Lady of Angels Open Table programs, who serve meals once a week. The Open Table Program serves meals at no charge to individuals Monday through Friday.

The San Diego, California Altrusa Club celebrated United Nations Day October 24th. The children at Blessed Sacrament school sent letters to the Wellspring Community school children who wrote back to them. Each
child received a letter with their name on it. The San Diego Altrusans also sponsored the Computer Literacy Training for the Wellspring teachers where the classes are held at the US Embassy school in Zambia. The photo shows the teachers from the Wellsprings community school, Sarah West, Director of the Wellsprings Community School and Jim Anderson, principal of the US embassy school where the computer classes are held.

Montgomery County, Maryland club collected over 2,000 books for our Make a Difference Day project for the Friends of Montgomery County Public Library Used Book Store. The recently opened in the county and needed used books. All hands were on deck, the club had 90% participation.

Altrusa International of Wausau, WI, observed its 70th anniversary of service to the Wausau area recently. Also offering congrulations were State Rep. Donna Seidel and Marathon County Administrator Brad Karger shown with Gayle Tesch. Eleven past presidents of the club were among the guests at the event which included violin music by Robin McDowell of the Wausau Conservatory of Music during the social hour, dinner, a video of past Altrusa events and recollections of 1939.
